Vineyards-Sculptures-Hiking Track in the Ruwer Valley

"Modern art at Wingert" in the vineyards of Mertesdorf

In 1997, Cologne artist Matti Braun’s arrangement of polyester seats beneath a pergola entwined with vine leaves was awarded the "Nikolaus Cusanus Wine Culture Talent Award" offered by the registered association of "Riesling Vineyards in the Bernkasteler Ring - since 1899", which set it up in the vineyards of one of its member wineries, Erben von Beulwitz/Hotel-Weingut Weis in Mertesdorf, in December 1998 – with active support from the cultural foundation of a savings bank and other sponsors.

The modern sculpture is conducive to discussing the Ruwer Riesling as part of a social gathering, or tasting wine and relaxing in a spectacular setting. The striking location above the Hotel-Weingut Weis also provides a wonderful view over the Ruwer Valley, the foothills of the Hunsrück, and what are probably the Ruwer region’s most famous vineyards: "Kaseler Nies'chen", "Maximin-Grünhäuser Abtsberg" and "Eitelsbacher Karthäuserhofberg".
